The state flag of Abkhazia symbolizes the main stages in the development of the statehood of the Abkhaz people - one of the most ancient indigenous ethnic groups in the Caucasus. An open white palm on a red background is a symbol of the Abkhaz statehood, which was formed during the Abkhazian kingdom (8-10 centuries) and is 12 centuries old. Along the length of the flag there are seven alternating equal-width stripes of green and white: four green and three white stripes. White symbolizes spirituality, green symbolizes youth and life. Seven white five-pointed stars above the palm are the seven main regions of historical Abkhazia: Sadzen (Jigetiya), Bzyp, Gumaa, Abzhua, Samurzakan, Dal-Tsabal, Pskhuy-Aibga.
On June 3, 2005, the President of Abkhazia Sergei Bagapsh signed a decree declaring July 23 the Day of the State Flag.
The valiant defenders of Abkhazia swore allegiance to the Motherland and the flag during the Patriotic War of the people of Abkhazia in 1992-1993, and today the servicemen of the Armed Forces of Abkhazia take the oath of allegiance to the flag and the country. The flag of Abkhazia soars over every school, kindergarten, and state institutions.
