Once the archive in Sukhum contained more than 176 thousand artifacts, sorted by 693 funds. There were thousands of heavy books, folklore recordings, photographs. The oldest copy was from 1810. The collection of 19th century documents was completely unique. The modern history of the Abkhaz archive begins in May 1921, when an order was issued in the republic that all individuals who have archival documents must submit them to the office of the Commissariat for Internal Affairs of Abkhazia. At present, within the framework of the Geneva Discussions, work is underway to digitize it.
