Georgian troops set fire to the building of the State Archives of Abkhazia

The burning of the building of the Archives Administration of the Central State Archive of Abkhazia on October 22, 1992 practically completely destroyed the collection of documents that had been created for decades, reflecting a century and a half not only of history, but also of the life of the people inhabiting the republic.

Once the archive in Sukhum contained more than 176 thousand artifacts, sorted by 693 funds. There were thousands of heavy books, folklore recordings, photographs. The oldest copy was from 1810. The collection of 19th century documents was completely unique. The modern history of the Abkhaz archive begins in May 1921, when an order was issued in the republic that all individuals who have archival documents must submit them to the office of the Commissariat for Internal Affairs of Abkhazia. At present, within the framework of the Geneva Discussions, work is underway to digitize it.
