CONSTITUTION DAY IS CELEBRATED IN ABKHAZIA ON NOVEMBER 26

The Constitution of the sovereign, democratic, legal state of the Republic of Abkhazia was adopted by the Supreme Council on November 26, 1994. On the same day, the deputies of the country's highest legislative body elected the first president - Vladislav Ardzinba.

The Constitution of Abkhazia was adopted in difficult conditions after the Georgian-Abkhaz armed conflict. The Constitution enshrines the integrity, inviolability and non-alienation of the territory of the Republic of Abkhazia; the division of the legislative, executive and judicial branches of state power was proclaimed; human rights and freedoms are guaranteed.

On October 3, 1999, in a referendum, the overwhelming majority of the citizens of Abkhazia approved the current basic law of the country. On the basis of the results of the referendum on October 12, 1999, the parliament adopted the Act on State Independence of the Republic of Abkhazia.

Abkhazia appreciates the importance of the fact that the Constitution is recognized as complying with international standards not only in Abkhazia itself, but also in Russia, and in a number of other states of the near and far abroad.

The day of the adoption of the Constitution of Abkhazia is an important milestone on the path of the revival of our statehood, a real embodiment of the centuries-old dream of the Abkhaz people about free and independent development and entry into the world community as a subject of international law.

Eternal memory and eternal glory to those who gave their lives for us to live in an independent and legal state.

The State Committee for Repatriation of the Republic of Abkhazia congratulates the people of Abkhazia on the Constitution Day and wishes the Republic of Abkhazia prosperity.
